Abstract
This study examines the influence of social media trends on motivation for physical activity and overall wellness among undergraduates in tertiary institutions in Lagos State. A descriptive survey research design was employed, targeting undergraduate students from the University of Lagos, Akoka; Federal College of Education, Akoka; and Yaba College of Technology, Yaba. A total of 200 respondents were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were gathered through a self-designed questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square (X²) inferential statistics at a 0.05 alpha level. The findings indicated that social media trends have a significant effect on students’ motivation toward physical activity (Cal X² = 105.208 > Tab X² = 2.131, p < 0.05) and a substantial impact on wellness (Cal X² = 80.112 > Tab X² = 2.131, p < 0.05). The study also revealed that about 80% of undergraduates own Android phones and spend 16–20 hours daily on social media, resulting in decreased academic productivity, increased risk of obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and diminished participation in physical exercises. It therefore recommends the creation of health-focused social media campaigns, establishment of structured digital wellness programs, policy-driven awareness initiatives, and integration of regular physical activities into institutional culture to enhance student health and wellbeing.
