Abstract
This study examines the role of Premarital Counselling in Enhancing Communication, Intimacy, and Conflict Resolution Skills in Marriage in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State. The study specifically investigates how exposure to premarital counselling influences communication skills, emotional intimacy, and the ability to manage marital disputes effectively. A descriptive survey design was adopted, involving a sample of 200 respondents drawn through stratified random sampling from newly married couples in the study area. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that couples who attended premarital counselling demonstrated higher levels of open communication, emotional closeness, and effective conflict management compared to those who did not. The findings further indicated that counselling significantly improved couples’ problem-solving approaches and their ability to compromise during disagreements. The study concludes that premarital counselling plays a vital role in fostering marital stability and cordiality by equipping couples with communication and conflict resolution skills. It recommends that premarital counselling be institutionalized and made mandatory for intending couples, delivered by trained counsellors, and supported with continuous post-marital follow-up to sustain the positive outcomes of the counselling experience.
