Abstract
To promote a safe and supportive learning environment that contributes to national development, this study investigates the problem of sexual harassment among students in tertiary institutions in Taraba State, Nigeria. The research specifically examines the psychological, educational, and social impacts of sexual harassment on female students’ academic performance, as well as the underlying factors that encourage such misconduct among male students and lecturers. The objectives are to identify the major causes of sexual harassment in higher institutions and assess its effects on the academic, mental, and physical well-being of female students. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were gathered through a structured questionnaire administered to 350 respondents across selected tertiary institutions. The data were coded, tabulated, and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), with the Chi-square test applied to determine relationships between variables. Findings revealed that a significant number of female students experience frequent harassment from lecturers and male peers, which adversely affects their motivation, self-esteem, and academic achievement. The study concludes that addressing the root causes of sexual harassment is essential for institutional leaders, educators, and policymakers. Therefore, it recommends the implementation of strict anti-harassment policies, awareness campaigns, and counseling services to promote gender equity, ensure psychological safety, and enhance human capital development for national growth.
