Abstract
This study examined the problem-solving difficulties encountered by students in mathematics at the Federal Polytechnic, Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria. The research adopted a qualitative approach to explore the nature, causes, and gender-based variations of students’ challenges in mathematical problem-solving. Sixty students comprising fifty males and ten females were purposively selected from National Diploma I and II mathematics courses, alongside three mathematics lecturers who participated through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Findings revealed that students struggled most with algebraic manipulation, word problem interpretation, and application of mathematical formulas. Contributing factors included inadequate foundational knowledge, poor study habits, mathematics anxiety, and ineffective instructional methods. Lecturers further identified limited use of learner-centered teaching strategies and insufficient teacher training in problem-solving pedagogy as significant barriers. Gender-related differences were observed, with female students exhibiting higher levels of math anxiety and lower confidence compared to their male counterparts. The study concludes that improving students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities requires enhanced teacher competence, incorporation of interactive teaching techniques, and the creation of supportive learning environments that reduce anxiety and foster self-efficacy. Recommendations include targeted interventions such as mathematics clinics, peer tutoring, and professional development for lecturers to strengthen problem-solving instruction.
