Abstract
The study examined the influence of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity on open and distance learning in universities across Rivers State. A descriptive survey design was employed, guided by three research questions and one hypothesis. The population comprised 320 ICT staff from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State University, and the University of Port Harcourt. Using Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size table, 175 participants were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using an 18-item questionnaire validated by three experts, with a reliability coefficient of 0.68 obtained via Cronbach Alpha. Mean, standard deviation, and z-test were used for data analysis. Findings revealed that artificial intelligence promotes individualized learning, while cybersecurity threats and vulnerability levels remain high in these institutions. The study recommended that ICT personnel receive continuous training to enhance their understanding of AI applications in open and distance learning, strengthen cybersecurity measures, and that university management adequately fund ICT departments to mitigate security risks.
