Abstract
This paper examined the error on student solutions in performing operations on integers in one of the private schools in Metro Manila with 147 respondents aged 11-12. The research aims to determine the average level of knowledge and understanding of students on the prerequisite of Integers; (b) determine the types of errors students commit in performing operations on integers; and (c) determine the students’ reasons for their errors in performing operations on integers. Findings show that the Grade 7 students are at an average level for the prerequisite knowledge and understanding of Integers. The errors observed in Operation of Integer tests were carelessness, poor basic knowledge, rule mix up, and inability to assimilate knowledge on integers (or that students were still treating integers as whole numbers). Furthermore, the research suggests that students who demonstrate higher level of knowledge (high and above) are more prone to errors due to carelessness, whereas those at lower proficiency levels (average, below average, and low) are predominantly committing poor basic knowledge. This research also revealed that students make errors due to poor mathematical language skill, misconceptions on the number zero, time pressure impact, fundamental gaps on mathematical concepts and skills and instructional effect on students learning.
