Abstract
Incorporating virtual reality (VR) tools into pedagogical instructions has been found to allow opportunities for abstract conceptualization, thereby enhancing learners’ understanding of complex concepts. However, the use of VR tools in biology has not been extensively explored, primarily due to its accessibility and the perception that VR devices are perceived as gaming tools rather than learning mediums. This study investigated the effect of VR tools on students’ conceptual understanding, performance, and perceived usefulness. The intervention was implemented to 33 STEM students. To gauge the effect of the VRI approach on the student’s conceptual understanding, data from pre- and post-diagnostic tests were collected and analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test in SPSS, the effect size and item analysis were also performed. On the other hand, the effect of the VRI approach on the performance of the students was obtained from the summative assessments (SA). Descriptive analysis of the SA scores was conducted using SPSS. Regarding the students’ perceived perception of VR’s usefulness, selected students were interviewed, and their responses were thematically analyzed. The findings revealed that the VRI approach improves students’ conceptual understanding and performance. The students also perceived that VR tools enhance their visualization of concepts and create an immersive experience. However, the complex features of the controllers and its limited availability hindered their learning. Moreover, it creates a fun, engaging, and interactive learning environment. The incorporation of VR tools into pedagogical instruction also enhances the teachers’ digital competency and provides opportunities for professional development. Additionally, it fosters innovative and creative approaches to teaching.
