Abstract
The CoViD-19 pandemic pushed for educational institutions to innovate the way students learn. While there were remedies utilized to continue education, it has been evident that it had pose problems, more so in the field of chemistry education. While it is known that laboratory activities bridge theory to practice, they were not fully utilized because of the distance learning modality. Therefore, the action-research proposed advocates for the use of virtual laboratories and jigsaw cooperative learning to continue improving the learning of chemistry. The developed Jigsaw Cooperative Virtual Laboratory Modules (JCVLM) were validated by four chemistry teachers and an expert in teaching and learning. The validated modules were implemented to six in-tact class taking general chemistry on the topic of chemical bonding, stoichiometry, and gas laws. After the implementation, the students had medium learning gain on the three covered topics of the JCVLM. Furthermore, the science process skills test revealed low learning gain. Five themes emerged (Visualization, simulation of concepts, validation of information via group processing, practice of science process skills, and focused discussion) after thematic analysis to determine the students’ perception on how JCVLM helped them learn the topics. Students also reported positive attitudes towards the use of virtual laboratories. Plans for the next cycle of this action-research is to develop more guided activities that promotes better SPS.
