Abstract
Ki Hajar Dewantara is a great educator in this Asian part of the world and his philosophical thoughts on education have greatly influenced the Indonesian educational system. His ideas as adaptable and applicable to the Eastern culture. Dewantara's insights inspire us to accept some positive aspects of Western ideas and apply them in an Eastern culture without losing the personality of the individual or the nation. Western and Eastern educational thoughts can be mixed to a certain degree. The study arrived at the following conclusions: a) Dewantara might well have said: educate the hand, the head, and the heart (Pestalozzi) b) He could be said to lend an impetus rather than anything new c) He simply wanted education to spread, produce to the masses, for education, he insisted, should not be limited to the gentry alone d) Dewantara can be said to have contributed an emphasis rather than a new theory: viz., the complete and harmonious development of all human powers with respect to all the people e) He nevertheless contributed greatly to the development of Indonesian education. His influence is mainly his spirit that permeates and inspires education in Indonesia today.
