Abstract
Nemesio Regalado, Jr., also known as Jun Regalado, is highly respected for his precision drumming and referred to as the most recorded drummer in the Philippines.
This research examined each stage of his life and identified key factors and influences that shaped his phenomenal and multi-faceted drumming career as professional drummer, music businessman, and music educator in the Philippines over the period of 1963-2018. It reveals how prolific his drumming career has been, adds to the literature of Original Pilipino Music history and Philippine cultural history, and aims to inspire other musicians. It is a pioneering biographical work that adds to research literature as it focuses on the life of a drummer, which has been rarely or not even written about.
Historical narratives from him and his business partner-wife, augmented by stories from his musical colleagues were blended into the context of historical accounts already documented by Filipino music historians. The author employed Lemon’s historical method with descriptive, narrative, and analytical proponents and the social network theory to shape the analysis for this research, making it clear that the web of his social connections and opportunities influenced and enabled his career trajectory every stage of his life.
Regalado’s gift of musical talent was nurtured by numerous astonishing interactions and events. His gift of perfect rhythm is reflected in what he and his wife describe as being “at the right place, at the right time.” With his gift, Regalado seized opportunities that came his way, worked hard, and “it just happened.”
