Abstract
The Philippines as a developing country is undergoing structural changes in the economy. Employment structure adjustments are essential components of these changes. In this paper, the researchers used OLS regression models to determine the existence of employment trends in the three broad sectors of the economy: agricultural, industrial and services sectors. The changes in the employment shares of these three sectors over the time span of 33 years (1970-2002) has been thoroughly captured in this study. The specific factors of structural changes namely, income per capita, labor productivity, trade and female labor force participation are regressed against the changes in employment figures in an attempt in determine the significance of these elements behind the adjustments in the employment structure of the Philippines. The empirical results of these study showed that employment figures in the Philippines has been shifting from agriculture towards the services sector, while the industrial sector employment has almost remained constant. This phenomenon is well explained by the factors of income per capita, labor productivity and female labor force participation but not by trade.
