Abstract
This cross-sectional study explored how grit and hope predict mental health among college students in the Philippines. Five hundred sixteen (516) Filipino college students completed online surveys that measure grit (Datu et al., 2017), Locus of Hope (Bernardo, 2010), and measures of positive and negative mental health. Multiple regression analyses showed that Perseverance of Effort and Adaptability to Situations were predictors of positive mental health, while Consistency of Interest was a strong predictor of negative mental health. Internal Locus of Hope and External-Family Locus of Hope were predictors of positive mental health. Findings highlight the nuanced influence of grit and hope dimensions on college students’ positive and negative mental health outcomes. It further highlights the relevance of developing counseling programs and interventions that cultivate internal strengths and address symptoms of distress within an interdependent, collectivist society.
