Abstract
Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are emerging technologies that face many challenges like ensuring scalability and security as new projects are implemented. Hence a need for reliable protocols arises with numerous researchers working towards a more efficient proposal. This research focuses on Group Key Management and Authentication in relation to WSN nodes. As such, this paper aims to implement a Lightweight Authentication and Key Management Scheme for WSNs proposed by Qin et al. as the protocol outperforms existing protocols in simulation but lacks implementation. Moreover, a modified version of the proposed scheme will be proposed suited for IoT topology and measures against replay and spoofing attacks. In this paper, the researchers aim to modify and implement the proposed protocol by using Node MCU-based (ESP32) microcontrollers to test the scheme in a local environment along with its ability to prevent replay and spoofing attacks. Hence, ensuring a secure user authentication with new nodes that join the IoT topology. The implemented protocol will go through screening methods such as energy consumption test, packet delivery rate test, replay and spoofing attack test, networking distance tests, and reconnection test. The implementation of Qin's protocol is significant to ensure the efficiency and security of the AKMS in a local environment that will ultimately benefit IoT and WSN projects in many fields such as commerce, healthcare, tourism, and transport.
