Abstract
Menstruation is a normal physiological process that women experience during puberty for the first time. This experience regularly comes monthly and is a big portion of the lives of menstruators. However, due to cultural and religious concepts, menstruation can be stigmatized if not considered a taboo that makes menstruators feel shameful, shy or scared in sharing their menstruation stories. Period on Period is a web documentary which allows its audience to be familiar with contemporary perspectives on menstruation. This aims to specifically address the problems of menstrual stigma in the Philippine context which forms as a support to the advocacy of existing productions, while also allowing its audience to have that sense of lived experience from individuals facing menstrual stigma and their particular ways of conquering it. Through the stories of five women, we exemplify menstrual stigma through stories surrounded by shame, shyness, or fear of discussing menstrual experiences in aspects of menstrual leave, menstrual products, menstrual lores and menstrual staining, while also giving room to discuss their chosen navigation through these issues. To ensure the quality of information received in the web documentary, we bring on board an OB-GYNE to discuss his professional opinion on the stories of these women. Each story in the web documentary is limited to 5 minutes per story, allowing easier digestion of each story’s content. The web documentary is designed to be only accessed through mobile phones as it is aligned with the contemporary media consumption patterns of Filipinos, as well as easier accessibility. Hence, allowing ‘Period on Period’ to reach a broad audience, including men and young individuals, in challenging the problems caused by menstrual stigma. Website with embedded video links.
