Abstract
In the Philippines, millions of Filipinos have left home in pursuit of better living conditions and working opportunities. The political climate from the early 2000s have remained the same, where corruption and injustice continue to make Filipinos suffer its consequences. The thesis film aims to discuss the personal and sociopolitical grounds influencing Filipinos’ decisions to pursue opportunities outside their country. Balik Bayan is a 15-minute short feature film on migration inspired by the stories of Filipino emigrants. Set during the early 2000s, the film tells the story of Carlo, a persevering office worker and loving son. He is at a crossroads between his duty in the Philippines, or his dream opportunity in another country. The film follows Carlo’s heartfelt decision as he slowly lets go of a place he once called home. The title is a play on the words Balikbayan, pertaining to someone returning to or visiting their homeland, and Balik-Tanaw meaning to look back on a past event.
