Abstract
Gino, Gino Takot sa Anino is a 68-page children’s storybook grounded in the narrative of the Duterte administration’s war on drugs, also known as tokhang. It aims to visualize the possible impressions of tokhang on children and the process of overcoming one’s fear after a tragic experience; guided by the values of hope, healing, and mass resistance. The narrative follows Gino, a nine-year-old boy who lives happily with his parents in Barangay Malabanan. One night, he sees a scary shadow walking near their house. The next morning, he discovers his father is missing. He suspects that the ominous shadow has something to do with it. After that incident, Gino develops a fear of the shadow, as other people in their place also start disappearing. However, a collective light from their community gives Gino the courage to confront his fear and take part in driving away the darkness brought by the shadow. The printed storybook is intended for children aged 9 to 13. The narrative was developed with the intention of raising awareness of the dark and cruel reality of tokhang and in the hopes that stories of victims denied due process will not become cautionary tales forgotten over time. The storybook was consulted with literature experts and Filipino professors to ensure that the content was suitable for the target audience. The storyline and characterization were carefully developed to reflect actual narratives of orphaned children, supported by relevant research. Interviews were conducted with relatives of tokhang victims to gain firsthand knowledge of their experiences. Moreover, an artist was commissioned to make illustrations for the storybook based on a storyboard conceptualized by the proponents that best expresses the tone of the narrative and effectively communicates with the target audience.
