Abstract
Aims to investigate the impact on a relationship between a Filipino elderly parent and their adult child–when the parent expresses their desire to be sent to a retirement home. This underscores changing family structures and the interplay between cultural values and social contexts. While elderly care is a prominent traditional practice that continually carries on in the Philippines, the ever-changing and dynamic nature of society pushes major differences when juggling familial responsibilities. Mano a Mano explores themes of filial piety, complexities of aging, growing cultural values, and elderly care, particularly in modern contexts. The short film is primarily in Filipino with some parts being in English. A semi-structured interview was conducted with six (6) participants who are aged 25 and above, that are currently looking after and taking care of their elderly parent/s. The participants expressed their thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences regarding elderly care in modern context—all while providing clear insights on the challenges and emotional dilemmas associated with the topic of retirement homes. With that, dramatizations were written, then produced and recorded to help portray the struggles that arise from the interplay of cultural values and societal contexts in elderly care. The clips for this project were produced and shot in person, ensuring consistent and cohesive quality throughout the film in MP4 Format. This format was selected to maintain high-resolution quality and ensure compatibility, allowing multiple digital platforms to maximize audience reach. This cinematic format aims to foster critical discussions and increase awareness about the dynamics of elderly care in the Philippines.
