Abstract
“TUKLAS” is a 23-minute documentary that delves into the traditional medicinal practices and beliefs of ordinary and traditional Filipinos. With the progression of modern medicine, the compensation for these advancements leaves ordinary Filipinos looking for a more accessible and affordable alternative, especially in the rural areas of the country. While it is the traditional practice for Filipinos to turn to albularyos for healing, modern times have paved the way for them to look down on these practices, more so on albularyos themselves. This created a stigma, leaving a lasting stain on their name and reputation. The documentary consists of 7 individuals: 3 albularyos, two medical professionals, one religious expert/pastor, and one testimonial. These individuals were interviewed regarding their knowledge, opinions, and beliefs within the realm of their expertise. These interviews expose different standpoints towards the said practice: opposing, co-existence, respect, and philanthropy. Moreover, observational footage was incorporated to get a proper glimpse of the true-to-life practices of the traditional faith healers. Most interviews and testimonies were produced and conducted in person to cater to the cinematography consistency of the documentary. However, one interview had to be conducted via Zoom due to location constraints. The documentary is provided in MP4 format to ensure high-resolution quality and convenient accessibility for academic and professional use. Overall, TUKLAS encourages its audience to reflect with an open mind. Through the narratives of the healers, medical professionals, and religious experts, the documentary highlights an often-overlooked aspect of Filipino culture, challenging its audiences to deliberate on the progressive relationship between faith, science, and healing.
