Abstract
The project is an existing 6-storey academic school building with a total floor area of about 14,000 sq.m. located in Caloocan City. The structure, originally designed to be an 11-storey building with helipad based on the old structural code NSCP 1992, was constructed in 2003 using reinforced concrete frames and is resting on a mat foundation. The owner now wishes to determine if a vertical expansion of 5 additional floors based on the original design of an 11-storey with helipad can still be performed on the existing structure based on the current structural code NSCP 2010 and using a performance-based evaluation. Thus, a structural assessment of the existing structure is required. The main task of the practicum project is to perform a structural assessment of the existing academic school building. The objective of the assessment is to provide sufficient information on the structural capacity of the existing building to accommodate a vertical expansion of 5 additional floors based on the current structural code NSCP 2010 and using a performance-based evaluation. These include performing detailed site ocular inspections and condition assessment, verifying the structural as-built drawings, performing material testing, performing structural analysis and evaluation, and providing a conclusion and recommendation. The practicum project has been an excellent actual industry experience for the practicum student, which include an on-site observation of the condition of the existing building, understanding material behaviors and the factors affecting their qualities, and applying knowledge of structural theories and design methods gained from academic subjects in graduate school. It has also been an excellent training ground for the practicum student to understand and apply the principles of performance-based evaluation in the structural assessment of an existing building.
