Abstract
The need to effectively and accurately quantify the various mechanical properties of bamboo has been gathering attention in the industry because of its structural and economic implications. The perpendicular tensile strength of bamboo is one of the mechanical properties that determine its structural usability, and there is an issue with its absence in the ISO 22157 standard (2004). While there have been attempts by various researchers to provide alternative methods, a consensus must be arrived in order to standardize the testing of this mechanical property. This research performed a comprehensive testing treatment that utilized three testing methods, two of which being the widely used alternatives, the Pittsburgh method developed by Mitch (2009) and an adaptation of the ASTM D143 standard. The third testing method is proposed in the study, the modified Colombia test, which combines elements of other testing methods as another approach to determining the perpendicular tensile strength. The three testing methods were compared using multiple criteria, the most important of which being able to produce the best results. Other factors were considered as well, such as the feasibility of specimen design, equipment fabrication, and overall ease of use and execution.
The modified Colombia test produced strength readings of 0.866 MPa, notably lower than that of the Pittsburgh method (1.062 MPa) and the ASTM D143 Test (1.075 MPa.) The produced values are further validated by a contemporary study published by Base Bahay. The Modified Colombia Test is able to produce consistently more conservative results due to its differing load transmission, and the accessibility it provides with regards to its simpler equipment setup prove it to be a noteworthy, effective alternative method . Several recommendations that pertain to further adjusting the modified Colombia test were also made.
