Abstract
The proposed Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP), Phase V, Contract Packages 2 and 3 of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) aims to mitigate the occurrence of flooding along the Upper Marikina River. The PMRCIP includes the construction of inverted T-walls that will line the river channel to prevent water from overflowing during heavy rainfall. During the project’s construction phase, the as-built plans were not thoroughly followed, and piles were not installed on the inverted T-wall, which increased the risk of structural failure. This study proposes a reliability analysis as part of DPWH's standards concerning each project's structural measures. For the concerned project, the bearing capacity of the soil is the primary phenomenon that will be analyzed using a probabilistic approach in which cohesion, friction angle, unit weight of soil, and flood elevations extracted from the geotechnical report and flood elevation data are the random variables under consideration. The Serviceability Limit State (SLS) and Ultimate Limit State (ULS) performance functions were established with different load combinations to differentiate the effects of including piles with the inverted T-wall. Monte Carlo Simulation was performed in the bearing capacity calculations with and without piles. Results show a probability of failure of 0 for SLS with and without piles, while a probability of failure of 1.0 and 0.6 was observed for ULS without and with piles, which shows that the effect of extreme seismic events will cause the failure of the retaining wall especially if piles is not present. Moreover, the result shows biases, which may be due to predetermined values for the geotechnical report, which might lead to erroneous results and increased failure in the structure. As for the project area, increasing the number of boreholes can help significantly provide more accurate and unbiased results regarding reliability analysis.
