Abstract
The seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete school buildings in Valenzuela, Philippines, is a significant concern due to the region's high seismic risk. This study employs the N2 method for a comprehensive seismic fragility analysis, evaluating structural performance under earthquake loads. The methodology involves developing fragility and vulnerability curves based on structural capacity and seismic demand parameters, supported by a detailed inventory of building characteristics and nonlinear dynamic analyses using region-specific ground motion records. Fragility curves for various damage levels provide insights into building vulnerability, highlighting the importance of structural configuration, material properties, and seismic design parameters. The results from the vulnerability curves and damage and loss assessments underscore the critical need for targeted risk mitigation strategies, retrofitting priorities, and informed policy decisions. These findings are crucial for the local government unit, helping prioritize actions to enhance the seismic resilience of school buildings. This ensures the safety of students, faculty, and staff during seismic events. By advancing seismic risk assessment methodologies for educational infrastructure in seismically active regions, this study provides a robust foundation for improving structural integrity and safety in Valenzuela and similar areas. The study’s comprehensive approach and its focus on local conditions and building specifics make its findings particularly relevant for guiding practical and effective interventions. The integration of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment with structural analysis through the N2 method offers a detailed quantification of seismic fragility, providing a valuable tool for local authorities. Ultimately, this research contributes to a safer educational environment by informing strategies that mitigate seismic risks and enhance the overall resilience of school infrastructure.
