Abstract
Exposure of concrete structures to marine environment are susceptible to chemical attacks, which lead to concrete deterioration such as spalling. Various repairs are being practiced; however, unsuccessful results were observed as replaced steel reinforcement and new concrete will eventually deteriorate at the same rate again. With this, the researchers aim to study the behavior of corrosion-induced cracks when steel fiber reinforcement is introduced to the concrete mix design. Specimens underwent an accelerated corrosion test, to simulate concrete deterioration due to corrosion. Four (4) samples were observed, two (2) without steel fibers and two (2) with steel fibers on the top concrete cover. The specimens experienced external and internal cracking after 7 days. Crack width varied on each specimen, however, comparing the behavior of samples repaired with normal concrete to specimens repaired with steel fibers, more branching but narrower cracks were observed on the latter. Moreover, although similar specimens were prepared, the cracks varied due to non-uniform corrosion occurrence in the rebars. Mass loss was observed as well upon weighing the specimens’ reinforcement after testing. With this, it can be said that it can potentially be a repair method when further explored since the repair process still needs to be established.
