Abstract
Vegetables are a significant component of the Filipino diet due to their nutritional value and accessibility to households. However, these can harbor various foodborne parasites when consumed raw and unwashed. This research investigates the prevalence of foodborne parasites in various types of vegetables from selected public markets in Quezon City. Four different classifications of vegetables were used, namely tuber (potato), fruity (eggplant), leafy (cabbage), and bulb (onion), with a total of 108 samples and 27 samples per classification. Moreover, this research also explores the effects of different washing treatments in the presence of parasites. The treatments include tap water, saline solution, and an unwashed treatment as the control. Following the application of the washing treatment, the samples underwent the sedimentation technique to isolate potential parasites present. The sediment was collected and mounted on a glass slide for microscopic examination. The results revealed that 36 out of the 108, or 33% vegetable samples were contaminated with foodborne parasites like Ascaris spp., Taenia spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Fasciola spp., and Trichuris spp. The study has found that the prevalence of parasites such vegetable types, though varying, is not statistically significant at pAscaris spp. was found to be the most detected parasite (33%). While onions were found to have the highest parasite detection rate among vegetables (44.44%). Lastly, control treatment resulted to the highest number of parasitic prevalence (44%). Therefore, the results of this study further highlight the importance of proper hygiene, primarily thorough washing of vegetables before consumption
