Abstract
A Consensus Conference was convened on November 16th, 1995, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Phoenix, Arizona, with the specific aim of generating a consensus on three specific items: the definition of orthostatic hypotension, pure autonomic failure (Bradbury Eggleston syndrome, idiopathic orthostatic hypotension, progressive autonomic failure), and multiple system atrophy. The meeting was sponsored by the American Autonomic Society, and co-sponsored by the American Academy of Neurology. The following are the items on which consensus was reached. Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a reduction of systolic blood pressure of at least 20 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure of at least 10 mm Hg within 3 minutes of standing. It is a physical sign and not a disease. An acceptable alternative to standing is the demonstration of a similar drop in blood pressure within 3 minutes, using a tilt table …
