Abstract
After long-term perfusion in animals (12–24 h) the surfaces of the extracorporeal circuits were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Especially at points of slow and/or turbulent flow patterns, there were deposits of fibrin, blood clots, and cell fragments. The deposits were observed in circuits of standard equipment and full heparinization as well as in circuits with a “silica-free silicone rubber”-coating for better compatibility and reduced heparinization.
