Abstract
From Valour to Neurosis: Criminalization of the ‘Galeras’ Funk, ‘Peace’ and (Self-)Regulation of Conduct in the Favelas addresses the perceptions and experiences of youth violence among former members of ‘galeras’ funk (tribe-like groups of funk aficionados). The analysis focuses on the words ‘neurose’ (neurosis), used by the youths to describe a situation of high tension, and ‘violência’ (violence), related to the power of the drug trafficking factions in the Rio de Janeiro slums. The category ‘neurosis’ detects a change in the pattern of social interaction that marks the elimination of the ‘galeras’ from the circuit of funk events. Such perceptions help construct subjective views generated in the process of criminalization that operates the secular opposition between the ‘favela’ and the ‘asfalto’ (the regular urban space).
Key words: sociability, violence, favela, Rio de Janeiro funk, galeras
