La ley 13.963 de 22 de m'ayo de 1971 regula la estructura, funcionamiento y actuación de la policía nacional, siendo reglamentada por el Decreto 75/972 de 10 de febrero de 1972: Ley Orgánica Policial (en adeJante: LO.P.). El artículo 13 del Decreto-ley 15.098 facultó al Poder Ejecutivo para ordenar las disposiciones de la Ley Orgánica en un Texto Ordenado, suprimiéndose aquellas disposiciones que por su carácter transitorio hayan perdido su vigencia.
