Abstract
Este artigo apresenta uma reflexão sobre o conto “Na arca”, de Machado de Assis. O conto narra acontecimentos entre os filhos de Noé, personagens bíblicos, enquanto esperam as águas do dilúvio baixarem. Através do estudo das personagens, de seus comportamentos, das suas relações nesse contexto, é possível verificar o desmascaramento que o autor faz sobre a vaidade, sobre a disputa de poder inerente ao ser humano. Ao se acompanhar o processo investigatório que o autor faz ao compor a narrativa, percebe-se que o conto analisado representa aspectos típicos da obra machadiana: a ironia e a universalidade em relação à natureza humana.
