Abstract
Until recently it was believed that saliva production diminishes with increasing age physiologically. In relation to prosthodontics, the saliva production is high correlated with the adhesive function for prostheses. It is known that the Moslem Indonesian Elderly People do fasting during Ramadhan Month. The effect of fasting in decreasing saliva production has been studies. In this regard 62 elderly people, 60 - 75 years old, consisted of 25 men and 37 women were observed. The result showed that the mean of saliva production before fasting was 30.9677 ml/mm while during fasting the figure showed 26.0339 ml/mm. Using "t" test it was significant difference between saliva production before and during fasting. It is concluded that fasting affected the decreasing of saliva production.
