A trajetória acadêmica de Carlos Alberto Vesentini circunscreveu-se ao Departamento de História da Universidade de São Paulo. No ano de 1969, Carlos Alberto ingressava nesta Universidade para cursar História e Ciências Sociais, mas já no ano seguinte optava por consagrar-se aos estudos históricos. Bacharelou-se em 1973 e, no ano seguinte, sempre no mesmo Departamento, dava início a seu curso de pós-graduação. Ao defender sua Tese A Teia do fato, sob orientação do Professor Doutor Fernando António Novais, obteve o título de doutor em História Social em 1983.
