Abstract
Discover y-based research in landscape architecture requires design strategies that are open-ended and nonlinear, rather than research models that are focused on pre-determined outcomes or objectives. This should not mean a loss of rigour. A nonlinear model of landscape design is proposed, which adapts from scientific enquiry the distinction between the context of discovery and the context of justification. This model permits open-ended investigation by design, and provides a framework for peer review. It also provides a way for researchers to apply discovery based design to practical consultancy.
