Abstract
Un absceso cerebral (AC) es un proceso infeccioso focal, único o múltiple, localizado en el parénquima cerebral, que produce lisis tisular y se comporta como una lesión ocupativa de espacio (1,2,12), siendo una enfermedad supurativa desarrollada a partir de una siembra hematógena cuyo origen es una infección distante, o por continuidad (1,3), que cursa inicialmente como un área de cerebritis focal y se desarrolla a una colección purulenta rodeada y delimitada por una cápsula muy vascularizada. Actualmente se siguen perfeccionando técnicas y protocolos diagnósticoterapéuticos, y se buscan medidas que permitan controlar la historia natural de la enfermedad, haciendo del enfrentamiento a esta patología un arte complicado necesariamente interdisciplinario, más aún en la población infantil, debido a su dificultad en el diagnóstico y a la relevancia del mismo.
