Abstract
0 presente artigo discute qual é o fenômeno semântico responsável pela pluralidade de interpretações de sentenças comparativas verbais como 'João fuma mais do que Pedro'. Três possibilidades são examinadas: ambigüidade, vagueza e indeterminação, por meio de uma análise crítica desses conceitos que são fundamentais em semântica. Conclui-se mostrando que o fenômeno em questão é indeterminação, conceito que não se confunde com o de subdeterminação, e é definido como a presença, na forma lógica, de uma variável cujo domínio contextualmente dado. Por fim, são considerados outros fenômenos, em particular a interpretação anafórica de alguns pronomes e de sentenças modais, que também apresentam indeterminação.
