Abstract
Em 1893, ano do grande pânico financeiro que, com suas espetaculares falências, abalou a segunda administração do de-mocrata Cleveland, Frederick Jackson Turner lia, numa reu-nião da American Historical Association, em Chicago, o seu célebre ensaio sôbre "O Significado da Fronteira na História Americana". A época era de crise econômica e de desajusta-mentos sociais. A crise econômica era particularmente acen-tuada nos setores agrícolas do Sul e do Oeste, enquanto que nos setores industriais intensificava-se a concentração capita-lística. Aprofundavam-se as desigualdades sociais e a sombra das lutas de classes e a do Socialimo pairavam sôbre a nação, ameaçando a tão decantada democracia americana.
