Abstract
Dreams and witticisms, products of the rhetoric of the unconscious, attest to unconscious knowledge. So do the symptoms, slips of the tongue, double meanings, and blunders that give rise to the comic, which is deployed in action and requires the presence of witnesses in order to be effective. Both the joke and the comic reveal a forbidden territory that is unveiled by allowing their circulation in the social fabric, thus making tolerable the disappointments entailed by the latter.
