Abstract
Neste ensaio, buscamos apreender as especificidades da formação do Centro e a configuração da centralidade urbana em Florianópolis, compreendendo a marcha das continuidades e descontinuidades de sua história e como estas se arranjaram espacialmente dentro do processo de transição para a modernidade capitalista da cidade. Dentro deste longo processo de transição, que se origina a partir da segunda metade do século XIX, objetivamos demonstrar como o Centro tradicional adquire, a cada período, um significado novo em relação à cidade: do Centro moderno, ao Centro decadente para o Centro contra-hegemônico.
