El artículo trata el tema en el marco de las relaciones interétnicas Estado-sociedades indígenas, mediante una revisión e interpretación inicial de las legislaciones indígenas en Chile, y de los objetivos de la sociedad nacional, evidenciando las concepciones de base que ha sostenido históricamente el Estado en su relación con la sociedad mapuche.
