Abstract: The Effect of Students’ Background on Academic Performance. This study examines the effect of background variables on the academic performance of accounting students in a private university in Surabaya. The background variables under study included previous academic performance, prior knowledge on accounting, sex, motivation, preparedness, and expectations. The results show that previous academic performance, motivation, and expectations have positive and significant effects on the students’ overall academic performance in accounting, while preparedness affects only the students’ performance in management accounting. In contrast, prior knowledge on accounting and sex do not give significant impacts to the students’ overall academic performance.These findings indicate the importance of previous aca­demic performance as well as motivation and expectations as background variables in current academic performance. Keywords: students’ background, academic performance, accounting Abstrak: Pengaruh Background Mahasiswa terhadap Kinerja Akademik. Penelitian ini mengkaji pengaruh variabel background terhadap kinerja akademik mahasiswa akuntansi di Universitas Surabaya. Lima variabel background utama dipergunakan, yaitu kinerja akademik sebelumnya, pengetahuan akun­tansi sebelumnya, jenis kelamin, motivasi, kesiapan, dan ekspektasi. Hipotesis diuji menggunakan model regresi linier berganda OLS dan Robust Standar Error. Hasil penelitian memerlihatkan bahwa kinerja akademik sebelumnya, motivasi, dan ekspektasi memiliki pengaruh positif signifikan terhadap kinerja akademik keseluruhan, sementara kesiapan memberikan pengaruh positif hanya pada kinerja akademik akuntansi manajemen. Sebaliknya, pengetahuan akuntansi sebelumnya dan jenis kelamin tidak memberi­kan pengaruh signifikan terhadap kinerja akademik keseluruhan. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa kinerja akademik sebelumnya beserta motivasi dan ekspektasi adalah variabel background yang penting bagi kinerja akademik di perguruan tinggi. ملخص: أثر خلفية الطلبة على الأداء الأكاديمي. تبحث هذه الدراسة في أثر متغيرات الخلفية على الأداء الأكاديمي لطلبة المحاسبة في إحدى الجامعات الخاصة في سورابايا. وشملت متغيرات الخلفية قيد الدراسة: الأداء الأكاديمي السابق، والمعرفة السابقة بالمحاسبة، والجنس، والدافعية، والاستعداد، والتوقعات. وتُظهر النتائج أن الأداء الأكاديمي السابق والدافعية والتوقعات لها تأثيرات إيجابية ودالة إحصائيًا على الأداء الأكاديمي العام للطلبة في المحاسبة، في حين يقتصر أثر الاستعداد على أداء الطلبة في المحاسبة الإدارية فقط. وفي المقابل، لا تُحدث المعرفة السابقة بالمحاسبة والجنس تأثيرات جوهرية ذات دلالة إحصائية على الأداء الأكاديمي العام للطلبة. وتشير هذه النتائج إلى أهمية الأداء الأكاديمي السابق إلى جانب الدافعية والتوقعات بوصفها متغيرات خلفية تؤثر في الأداء الأكاديمي الحالي. الكلمات المفتاحية: خلفية الطلبة، الأداء الأكاديمي، المحاسبة. ملخص: أثر خلفية الطلبة على الأداء الأكاديمي. تبحث هذه الدراسة في أثر متغيرات الخلفية على الأداء الأكاديمي لطلبة المحاسبة في جامعة سورابايا. واستُخدمت متغيرات خلفية رئيسية تمثلت في: الأداء الأكاديمي السابق، والمعرفة المحاسبية السابقة، والجنس، والدافعية، والجاهزية، والتوقعات. اختُبرت الفرضيات باستخدام نموذج الانحدار الخطي المتعدد بطريقة المربعات الصغرى العادية (OLS) والأخطاء المعيارية القوية (Robust Standard Errors). وأظهرت نتائج البحث أن الأداء الأكاديمي السابق والدافعية والتوقعات لها تأثير إيجابي ودال إحصائيًا على الأداء الأكاديمي الإجمالي، في حين أن الجاهزية تُعطي تأثيرًا إيجابيًا فقط على الأداء الأكاديمي في المحاسبة الإدارية. وعلى النقيض من ذلك، لم تؤثر المعرفة المحاسبية السابقة والجنس تأثيرًا دالاً إحصائيًا على الأداء الأكاديمي الإجمالي. وتشير هذه النتائج إلى أن الأداء الأكاديمي السابق إلى جانب الدافعية والتوقعات تُعد متغيرات خلفية مهمة للأداء الأكاديمي في المرحلة الجامعية. الكلمات المفتاحية: خلفية الطلبة، الأداء الأكاديمي، المحاسبة.
