Publié récemment La Sentence de Jean Genet est pour de multiples raisons un texte de transition : il marque non seulement la transition littéraire entre le théâtre genétien et Un captif amoureux, ou la transition politique entre le Black Panther Party et les Palestiniens, mais il marque plus significativement la transition entre une période d'écriture journalistique et le retour à la fiction. Nous utiliserons les liens alors récents entre Genet et la presse pour lire La Sentence comme un texte porteur de la marque d'un refus : le refus d'un choix clair entre écriture littéraire et écriture journalistique. A l'aide d'une étude de la mise en page du texte autant que de son contenu, nous montrerons que l'intégration de la presse dans l'écriture littéraire, loin de marquer la dégradation du style genétien, permet une revitalisation proprement créative de ce dernier.

The recently published La Sentence by Jean Genet is in many ways a transitory text: indeed, it represents a literary transition from his theatre to Un captif amoureux; a political transition from the Black Panther Party to the Palestinians; and more importantly a transition from a period in which the author mainly practiced journalism to a return to fiction. Using the recently established link between Genet and the newspapers as a key element to analyse La Sentence, we will argue that the undefined status of this text is due to the writer’s refusal of a clear choice between the two types of writings he has been performing. Drawing on the implications of this choice, through a study both of the content and of the page layout chosen by Genet, we will detect how bringing press models into literary writing should be perceived not as a degradation of Genet’s style, but as a highly creative way to refresh it.
