Abstract
La significación que, en la construcción del Estado liberal, se concedió a los proyectos conmemorativos alcanzó en el dedicado a Mariana Pineda en Granada uno de sus desarrollos más expresivos. Resultado de un largo proceso (1836-1873), las fuertes connotaciones ideológicas de la empresa motivaron su carácter intermitente y variable, como reflejo de las contradicciones dominantes sobre el encargo público en esos momentos. Testimonio de un pasado próximo y cercano en la memoria local, a su indiscutible función de exaltación patriótica une el interés de tratarse del único monumento erigido en España en aquel siglo a la memoria de una heroína.
