Abstract
Lecture capturing is the term used for the recording of lecture time and making itavailable to students in digital format on the learning management system.Lecture capturing was introduced to enableallstudents to usetherecordedvideosof lectures for revision, orif the class was missedby a full time studentand forpart-time students to be able to watch all the full-time classes. The objective of thispaperis to determine whether the lecture capturing videos contribute to thelearning experience of the studentsin a mixed method teaching environment.Amixed methodstudy over a period of two years was done between the pass rate ofthird year level accountingstudents per module and theirlectureattendance, before and after (pre-/post-) the introduction of the lecture capturing.Acorrelation analysis was also performed to test the relationship betweenstudentperformance and lecture attendance, and compared the relationship for anychanges with the introduction of lecture capturing.Other contributing factorsimpacting the success of lecture capturingwerealso considered likethe number ofdownloads of videos compared to the number of downloads of the flippedclassroom videos.Theresults from this study indicated thatstudents’lectureattendance and the pass rate dropped compared to the previous year, where nolecturer capturing took place.Thecorrelationrelationship strengthened betweenstudent performance and lecture attendance with the introduction of lecturecapturing.Videos were relativelylong and studentsgenerallystruggled to findadditional time in their normal schedule to watch videos of theentirelecture.
