Abstract
Hyponatremia has been reported with the use of psychotropic drugs. Olanzapine does not find much mention as a cause of hyponatremia in literature; however, it has been found to be the second most frequently reported atypical antipsychotic to cause it. We report a case of hyponatremia due to syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion which occurred at a rapid onset following the administration of low-dose olanzapine during inpatient treatment of a patient with bipolar disorder. We would like to highlight our case for the need to be vigil about such fatal side complications apart from metabolic side effects of atypical antipsychotics.
L'hyponatrémie a été rapportée lors de l'utilisation de médicaments psychotropes. L'olanzapine est peu mentionnée dans la littérature comme cause d'hyponatrémie ; toutefois, elle s'avère être le deuxième antipsychotique atypique le plus fréquemment incriminé. Nous rapportons un cas d'hyponatrémie secondaire à un syndrome de sécrétion inappropriée d'hormone antidiurétique, survenu rapidement après l'administration d'une faible dose d'olanzapine lors de l'hospitalisation d'un patient présentant un trouble bipolaire. À travers ce cas, nous souhaitons souligner la nécessité de rester vigilant face à ces complications potentiellement fatales, au-delà des effets indésirables métaboliques des antipsychotiques atypiques.
