Abstract
An analytical case-control study was performed in Colon municipality, Matanzas province, Cuba, from 2000 to 2002. The universe of study was made up of 939 children aged 9, 12 and 15 years, from whom 120 were taken as equivalent random sample (63 females and 57 males). The risk characterization was based on deforming oral habits (40%), muscular hypotonia (16,70%, heredity performance (32,5%), malnutrition (20%), dental caries (56,70%) and lost teeth (25%). The estimated odds ratio was more related to oral habits (7,69%) muscular hypotonia (12,43%) and heredity (3,90%), which means that there exists the probability of getting sick in the face of the considered risk factors. This allows setting up an epidemiological surveillance system on this issue.
