Die tweeterreineleer is afkomstig van die onderskeid tussen profaan (of sekulêr) en sakraal (of heilig) wat reeds in die pagane Griekse denke aangetref word. Veral K. J. Popma het, insiggewende gegewens na vore gebring soos o.a. die oorsprong van die woord ‘profaan’ van die Latyn pro + fanum d.w.s. die heiligdom.
