Abstract
Em "O espelho", a personagem principal toma as rédeas da narração e explica, valendo-se do exemplo de um episódio de sua própria vida, sua ambiciosa teoria a respeito das "duas almas". O pragmatismo autoritário da narração serve, entretanto, para comprovar uma perspectiva monista: a "alma exterior" termina absorvendo a "alma interior", de modo que a identidade do sujeito depende totalmente do "olhar que vem de fora". Assim, nós seríamos identificáveis apenas por meio daquilo que exteriorizamos. Através desta perspectiva funcionalista, a alma funde a si mesma com o status do indivíduo, e a interioridade do sujeito se expressa tão somente por meio de uma vaga acidez crítica, na qual se ancora a frágil consciência irônica.
