Abstract
Neste artigo, faço uma revisão crítica histórico-teórica dos estudos sobre a pontuação, procurando mostrar as hipóteses da origem de cada um dos sinais, a evolução dos aspectos arbitrários e assistemáticos até a sua consolidação, depois do advento da imprensa. Num segundo momento, apresento uma pesquisa feita em gramáticas tradicionalmente conceituadas, escritas a partir do século XVI. Por último, abordo os estudos atuais sobre o assunto.
