Abstract
Commercially shrimp fishery in the Arafura Sea exploits a large amount of by-catch fishing composed mostly of demersal fish. In recent years, the small size of finfish and non edible crabs are found in large quantities in certain areas, meanwhile large finfish are rarely caught. Based on average value by sub areas of bycatch to shrimps, the average of ratio fish to shrimp in the Arafura Sea was 12 : 1. By-catch is remained the main issues of shrimp fishery management in the Arafura Sea. This is because of the by-catch was mostly discarded to the sea and only small portion of that by-catch was utilized by vessel’s crew. This phenomenon was ironic due to the by-catch was potentially suitable for human food consumption or processed to be animal feed. Management policies for improving the utilization of by-catch are still needed. Resource abundance and catch composition, ratio of shrimp and fish, and some recommendations for management option as a possible solution to the problem of utilization of shrimp by-catch in the Arafura Sea for fishing industry were discussed in this paper
