Abstract
A obra de Cláudio Manuel da Costa está entre as grandes produções do período colonial no Brasil. A proposta deste trabalho é analisá-la, tomando-se por base a “Fábula do Ribeirão do Carmo” (publicada primeiramente em 1768), que aqui é vista a partir das leituras estrangeiras feitas pelo poeta (literatura latina, italiana e espanhola), nos 5 anos em que morou em Portugal. A intenção é identificar a “Fábula”como poesia de submissão às vertentes petrarquista e ovidiana, no quese refere às questões morais e éticas, e à relação entre o poeta e seu objeto amado. A transgressão da natureza feminina e sua conseqüente metamorfose simbólica, tópicos presentes em Petrarca (Canz., 23) eOvídio (Actéon e Diana), são também abordados pelo poeta.
