A imagem da vida colonial antilhana que surge através da história das plantações não é uma imagem completa. Os problemas que a economia agrícola e já semi-industrial das ilhas apresentavam não eram os únicos. A ele se juntavam as dificuldades das relações com a metrópole, as questões comerciais e as de crédito, que eram tanto políticas quanto economicas. Mas era bem o problema de mão-de-obra, o problema, de homens, que estava no centro de tudo.
